Upcoming Events at The Nuyorican Poets Cafe
January-February 2009
|
Tomorrow, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe commemorates the inauguration by opening our doors for free and screening inauguration coverage on our big screen, beginning with the 10AM swearing-in ceremony.
Also in celebration of the inauguration, we're pleased to announce that our resident youth arts company Power Writers has created a video tribute to the inauguration that will be featured on the New York Times' website beginning tomorrow.
In other news: the Nuyorican has partnered with Snazl, a new video-sharing website which is sponsoring the multi-venue festival Snazlfest. This festival includes events at The Sidewalk Cafe, Goodbye Blue Monday and the Nuyorican, with short films curated by PS122; our installment of the festival takes place on Saturday, February 21 and features performances by La Bruja, Andres Carlos Gomez, Francesca Harper and other poetic and musical artists. A limited number of performance slots during the festival will be given to rising artists; interested performers should register at Snazl's website by February 6.
Our other upcoming highlights include performances by writer/director/actor Melvin Van Peebles (2/19, 20, 26 and 27) literary talents Tato Laviera and Laura Lomas (1/29), the Moth Story Slam (2/10), and productions of two plays, José Rivera's Sonnets for an Old Century (3/5-15) and Tim Douglass's Madonna Whore (2/12-14). Ongoing weekly events at the Nuyorican include our Friday Night Poetry Slam, Wednesday Night Slam Open and Thursday Night Latin Jazz.
The Nuyorican Poets Cafe is located at 236 East 3rd Street (between Avenues B and C).
